As inferred from bovine homologs, the ribosome catalyzes formation of a peptide bond between the aminoacyl group of the aminoacyl-tRNA at the A-site and the peptidyl-tRNA at the P-site. The result is a polypeptide, longer by one amino acid, attached to the tRNA at the A-site by an ester bond. A deacylated tRNA remains at the P-site. 55S ribosomes associate with the inner mitochondrial membrane and the translation products are cotranslationally inserted into the inner membrane.
