The FASN gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is translated to yield protein.

SREBF1A (SREBP1A) and SREBF1C (SREBP1C) bind the promoter of the fatty acid synthase gene (FASN) and enhance transcription (Bennett et al. 1995, Magana and Osborne 1996, Shimano et al. 1996, Boizard et al. 1998, Foretz et al. 1999, Shimano et al. 1999, Amemiya-Kudo et al. 2002, Griffin et al. 2007, Choi et al. 2008, Rome et al. 2008, reviewed in Horton et al. 2002). The enhancer activity of SREBF1 requires simultaneous binding of NF-Y and SP1 to the promoter (Xiong et al. 2000).
