TIM22 complex inserts proteins into inner membrane
The TIM22 complex inserts precursor proteins into the inner membrane of the mitochondrion (Sirrenberg et al. 1996, Kaldi et al. 1998, Kerscher et al. 1997, Leuenberger et al. 1999, Endres et al. 1999, Kovermann et al. 2002, Rehling et al. 2003, Vergnolle et al. 2005, Yamano et al. 2005). The precursors are hydrophobic and are usually chaperoned to the TIM22 complex by the small TIM proteins (TIM10, TIM12) of the intermembrane space (Koehler et al. 1998, Sirrenberg et al. 1998). Substrates of the TIM22 complex include AAC (Sirrenberg et al. 1996, Kerscher et al. 1997, Leuenberger et al. 1999, Endres et al. 1999, Vergnolle et al. 2005), PIC (Kovermann et al. 2002, Rehling et al. 2003, Yamano et al. 2005), TIM22 (Leuenberger et al. 1999), and TIM23 (Kerscher et al. 1997, Kaldi 1998, Leuenberger et al. 1999).
