Expression of Gata4 in definitive endoderm

Gata4 is expressed early in visceral and definitive endoderm (Arceci et al. 1993) and subsequently becomes restricted to mid-gut and posterior gut (Rojas et al. 2009, Rojas et al. 2010). Foxa2, also expressed early in endoderm formation, binds an enhancer in the second intron of the Gata4 gene and activates transcription in all endodermal progenitors (Rojas et al. 2010).
