The Gata4 gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is transcribed to yield Gata4 protein. Foxf1 binds enhancers of the Gata4 gene and activates transcription of Gata4 (Rojas et al. 2005). Bmp4 is also required to activate Gata4 in the embryo (Rojas et al. 2005). Bmp4 activates Foxf1 and may act on Gata4 via Foxf1.
