Expression of Perm1
The Perm1 gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is translated to yield protein. The Perm1 gene is expressed selectively in muscle where it is activated by Ppargc1a via the estrogen receptor Esrra, which binds regulatory elements in the first intron of the Perm1 gene (Cho et al. 2013). Perm1 expression in adult skeletal muscle promotes mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative capacity and vascularization, without affecting fiber type switching (Cho et al. 2016). Expression of Perm1 is activated by exercise (Cho et al. 2013, 2016).
