Phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK binds E-boxes in the promoter of the DBP gene and activates transcription (inferred from mouse homologs). DBP protein then binds D-boxes in promoters of circadian genes such as PER1 and enhances transcription (inferred from mouse homologs). DBP is expressed in a circadian rhythm in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (inferred from mouse homologs). Levels of DBP mRNA are highest in the morning (inferred from mouse homologs).
