After phosphorylation of CLOCK by the kinase CSNK1D, the BMAL1:CLOCK heterodimer dissociates from DNA (inferred from mouse homologs). CRY and PER proteins form a complex with CSNK1D, shuttle CSNK1D into the nucleus, and bring CSNK1D into proximity with CLOCK (inferred from mouse homologs). CSNK1E appears to act redundantly with CSNK1D. Notably, after BMAL1:CLOCK dissociates from promoters, some promoters are negatively regulated and some promoters, such as the CRY1 promoter, are positively regulated by residual PER proteins (inferred from mouse homologs in Chiou et al. 2016).
