A dimer of phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK heterodimers binds adjacent E-boxes in the PER3 promoter (Matsumura and Akashi 2017, and inferred from mouse homologs). Phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK also binds one additional site in the promoter (Matsumura and Akashi 2017). Phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK recruits the histone acetyltransferase CREBBP (CBP) and the histone methyltransferase KMT2A (MLL1) (inferred from mouse homologs), and activates transcription.
