Based on the analogy with the canonical 20S core particle (20S CP), it is assumed that, upon dimerization of two half-immunoproteasomes to form the preholoimmunoproteasome, the active site–bearing beta-subunits, PSMB9 (beta-1i), PSMB10 (beta-2i), and PSMB8 (beta-5i), undergo autocatalytic cleavage of their propeptides, generating the mature catalytic sites and completing the immunoproteasome 20S core particle (20S iCP) assembly (reviewed in Tomko and Hochstrasser 2013).
