Mitochondrial import inner membrane translocase subunit TIMM21 (TIM21, C18orf55) carries the Complex IV subunits COX4 (either the ubiquitous isoform COX4I1 or the tissue-specific, predominantly lung isoform COX4I2), COX5A and COX6C across the inner membrane, where they bind to the MT-CO1:MITRAC complex (Mick et al., 2012; Dennerlein et al., 2015; Bourens & Barrientos, 2017).
