Gangliosides localize to the plasma membrane via vesicle transport, endocytosis, and exocytosis. COPII-coated vesicles, in general, can transport lipids between all organelle membranes. In particular, these processes are reponsible for the transport of very long chain ceramides, which are not transported by non-vesicular processes (reviewed by Funato et al., 2020).
