Based on mouse studies, EBF2 transcription factor promotes brown/beige adipogenesis by binding to EBF consensus sites in the regulatory sequences of target genes. In mouse brown and beige lineages, direct EBF2 binding has been demonstrated for PRDM16 gene (Rajakumari et al. 2013), PPARA gene (Shapira et al. 2017; Shao et al. 2021), and UCP1 gene (Shapira et al. 2017; Liu et al. 2020; Shao et al. 2021). Several other genes are annotated as candidate EBF2 target genes because they were shown in multiple studies to be positively regulated by EBF2 but binding of EBF2 to their regulatory sequences has not been explicitly reported. Candidate EBF2 target genes are CIDEA (Rajakumari et al. 2013; Wang et al. 2014; Zhao et al. 2014; Stine et al. 2016; Brunmeir et al. 2016; Shapira et al. 2017; Pearson et al. 2019), COX7A1 (Rajakumari et al. 2013; Wang et al. 2014; Zhao et al. 2014; Stine et al. 2016; Shapira et al. 2017), DIO2 (Rajakumari et al. 2013; Zhao et al. 2014; Shao et al. 2016; Mi et al. 2017; Shapira et al. 2017; Patil et al. 2017; Pearson et al. 2019; Shao et al. 2021), ELOVL3 (Shao et al. 2016; Mi et al. 2017; Liu et al. 2020), and PPARGC1A (Rajakumari et al. 2013; Wang et al. 2014; Zhao et al. 2014; Stine et al. 2016; Mi et al. 2017; Shapira et al. 2017).
