In response to an accumulation of unfolded protein in the mitochondrial intermembrane space, the kinase AKT is activated by phosphorylation through an uncharacterized mechanism, and phosphorylates estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) (Papa and Germain 2011) on serine-167 (Campbell et al. 2001, Papa and Germain 2011).
