The Tat-responsive region (TAR) RNA sequence from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is <30bp long and present as part of all HIV mRNAs at their 5' end, and in a free cytoplasmic form. This region also inhibits PKR, sustaining translation of viral proteins during infection (Gunnery et al, 1990; Sanghvi et al, 2011).
