DLX5 is expressed in the anterior neural plate border and in prospective non-neural ectoderm (inferred from chicken and mouse homologs). BMP4 (Leung et al. 2013, Mimura et al. 2016, and inferred from chicken homologs in Sjödal et al. 2007) and FGF4 (inferred from chicken homologs) induce expression of DLX5. WNT signaling is also required to obtain expression of DLX5 in embryonic stem cells programmed to become neural crest cells (Mimura et al. 2016).
