The TFAP2A:TFAP2B heterodimer binds 2.1 kb from the GBX2 gene (4.2 kb downstream of the transcription start site) and activates expression (inferred from chicken homologs in Rothstein and Simoes-Costa 2020). TFAP2A:TFAP2C heterodimers initiate expression of genes expressed in the neural plate border, then TFAP2A:TFAP2B heterodimers maintain expression during formation of the neural crest (inferred from chicken homologs in Rothstein and Simoes-Costa 2020).
