Human double-stranded RNA-specific adenosine deaminase 1 (ADAR1) is part of the RNA editosome complex involved in editing host and viral dsRNA. It shuttles between cytosol and nucleus (Patterson & Samuel, 1995; Barraud et al, 2014). and can inhibit protein kinase R (PKR, EiF2AK2), leading to sustained protein translation. For this reason, ADAR1 shows proviral activity in some viral infections (VSV, measles), independent of its usually antiviral RNA editing function (Nie et al, 2007; Wang & Samuel, 2009; Toth et al, 2009; George et al, 2016; Chung et al, 2018). Interactions between ADAR1, PACT, and HIV Tat proteins diminish PKR activation during HIV infection. (Chukwurah et al, 2017).
