Unphosphorylated STAT3 shuttles between the nucleus and cytosol. In the cytosol, STAT1 and STAT3 bind to PKR inhibiting its activation and repressing autophagy (Wong et al, 2001; Deb et al, 2001; Shen et al, 2012).
