During gastrulation, PAX6 is strongly expressed in the anterior neural plate and more weakly expressed in the posterior neural plate (inferred from mouse embryos). During differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells to neural tissue, Pax6 is directly activated by Pou3f1 (Zhu et al. 2014) and Znf521 (Zfp521) (Kamiya et al. 2011). Similar regulation is believed to occur in vivo.
