ZNF521 (ZFP521) is weakly expressed before gastrulation and then becomes strongly expressed in the epiblast, especially the prospective neuroectoderm (inferred from mouse embryos). After gastrulation, ZNF521 is expressed strongly in the anterior neural plate and anterior neural tube and more weakly in the posterior neural plate (inferred from mouse embryos). Deletion of Znf521 in mice causes behavioral abnormalities and reduced numbers of granular neurons and neural progenitors in the dentate gyrus and cerebellum (Ohkubo et al. 2014).
