HNF1B binds the promoter of the HNF4A gene and activates expression in the distal region of the comma-shaped body and the proximal region of the S-shaped body (inferred from mouse homologs and embryos in Heliot et al. 2013). In mice, Hnf4a encodes a transcription factor that is required for proximal tubule development, probably by regulating proximal tubule-specific genes (Marable et al. 2018).
