POU3F3 (also called BRN1) is expressed in distal regions of renal vesicles, S-shaped bodies, and regions of the nephron that develop into the thick ascending limb and the macula densa of the loop of Henle and the distal tubule (inferred from the mouse homolog). LHX1 activates expression of POU3F3 in developing nephrons (inferred from mouse homologs). HNF1B activates expression of POU3F3 in S-shaped bodies of developing nephrons (inferred from mouse homologs). In mouse, missense mutations in Pou3f3 alters numbers and development of nephrons (Rieger et al. 2016) and cause kidney dysfunction (Kumar et al. 2016).
