HNF1B binds several conserved sites between the IRX1 and IRX2 genes and activates expression of IRX2 in the intermediate region of the S-shaped body (inferred from mouse homologs in Heliot et al. 2013). Chromatin in the intergenic region appears to form a loop that brings HNF1B to within 587 bp of the IRX2 transcription start site (inferred from mouse homologs in Heliot et al. 2013).
