Sal-like protein 1 (SALL1) is expressed in metanephric mesenchyme and the expression requires SIX1 (inferred from mouse embryos). In mice, a lack of Sall1 causes incomplete ureteric outgrowth and failure of tubule formation in the metanephric mesenchyme. Therefore, Sall1 is required for ureteric bud invasion of the mesenchyme (Nishinakimura et al. 2001). In mice, Sall1 also plays a role in limiting Wnt signaling to allow ureter branching (Kiefer et al. 2010)
