Soluble G protein is secreted in large amounts from RSV-infected cells before the first assembled virions appear on the host cell plasma membrane (Hendricks et al, 1987; Hendricks et al, 1988). The alternative initiation codon leading to sG expression is conserved in many RSV strains. There is evidence that sG binds to glycosaminoglycans presented on the surface of other cells where it presumably functions as an antigen decoy facilitating RSV evasion of antibody-mediated restriction of replication (Escribano-Romero et al, 2004; Bukreyev et al, 2008).
