LHX1 (also called LIM1) binds three conserved sites near the coding region of the Nephronectin (NPNT) gene. One site is about 14 kb upstream of the transcription start and two sites are in the 3' untranslated region (inferred from mouse homologs in Boualia et al. 2013). In mice, loss of Lhx1 results in complete loss of Npnt expression (Boualia et al. 2013). NPNT secreted from the nephric duct interacts with Integrin alpha8/beta1 (ITGA8) on metanephric mesenchyme cells to regulate expression of GDNF and formation of the ureteric bud (Brandenberger et al. 2001).
