Nephronectin (NPNT) is expressed in the ureteric bud epithelium and secreted into the extracellular space where it interacts with Intergrin alpha-8 (ITGA8) to regulate development of the ureteric bud (inferred from mouse homologs in Brandenberger et al. 2001, Boualia et al. 2013). LHX1 binds an upstream site and two sites in the 3' untranslated region of the NPNT gene to activate expression (inferred from mouse homologs in Boualia et al. 2013). In mouse embryos, loss of Lhx1 causes complete loss of Npnt expression. In mice, Pax2 and Pax8 also enhance expression of Npnt, however this effect may indirect through the activation of Lhx1 by Pax2 and Pax8 (Boualia et al. 2013).
