The SH mRNA of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) contains two translation initiation codons. Translation from the initiation codon closer to the 5' terminus of the SH mRNA produces small hydrophobic (SH) protein, the predominant translation product (Olmstedt and Collins 1989). Based on a pulse-chase study, SH protein is synthesized on the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the nascent protein localizes at the ER membrane (Olmstedt and Collins 1989). SH protein is expressed on the surface of infected cells where it forms pentameric ion channels (Gan et al. 2012) and is thought to function in delaying apoptosis of infected cells by inhibiting TNF-alpha signaling (Fuentes et al. 2007).
