Human PGCs express CXCR4 on their cell membranes (Mishra et al. 2021, Tang et al. 2022). In human PGCs differentiated in vitro, SOX17 directly activates expression of CXCR4 (Tang et al. 2022). In mouse embryos (Ara et al. 2003, Molyneaux et al. 2003) and zebrafish embryos (Doitsidou et al. 2002), Cxcr4 on PGCs interacts with its ligand, Cxcl12 which is secreted by somatopleur mesenchyme and genital ridges, and guides the migration of PGCs.
