The pluripotency-related factor NANOG (Mitsui et al. 2003) is expressed in human primordial germ cells differentiated in vitro (Irie et al. 2015, Tang et al. 2022). SOX17 and TFAP2C bind enhancers upstream of the NANOG transcription start site and activate NANOG expression (Irie et al. 2015, Tang et al. 2022). PRDM1 may (Irie et al. 2015) or may not (Sasaki et al. 2015) enhance expression of NANOG.
