MESP2 binds conserved E-box elements in an enhancer upstream of the EPHA4 transcription start site (inferred from mouse homologs). In mouse embryos, Mesp2 is expressed in the rostral half of prospective somites and activates expression of the Epha4 gene (Nakajima et al. 2006), which encodes an Eph receptor involved in signaling the formation of the somite boundary through an interaction with an ephrin on an adjacent cell.
