The Hairy and enhancer of split 7 (HES7) protein binds the promoter of the Lunatic fringe (LFNG) gene and represses activation of LFNG by NOTCH signaling (inferred from mouse homologs). Oscillatory expression of HES7 (inferred from the mouse homolog in Bessho et al. 2001) and repression of NOTCH signaling by LFNG (inferred from chicken homologs in Dale et al. 2003) cause oscillatory expression of LFNG during somite formation.
