KDM6A (UTX) demethylates histone H3 trimethyllysine-27 (H3K27me3, lysine-28 of the preprotein) to yield histone H3 monomethyllysine-27 (H3K27me1) in embryonic cells (Agger et al. 2007, Hong et al. 2007, Lan et al. 2007) and is inferred to catalyze the same reaction in zygotes. KDM6A participates in demethylating genome-wide H3K27me3 in cleavage stage embryos (inferred from mouse homologs).
