METTL23 catalyzes the asymmetric dimethylation of arginine-17 of histone H3.3 (arginine-18 of the preprotein) (inferred from mouse homologs). Dimethylation of histone H3.3 is required for assembly of H3.3 into chromatin in the male pronucleus of the zygote (inferred from mouse homologs).
