Before and during zygotic genome activation, AGO2 bound to an endogenous small interfering RNA (endosiRNA) derived from transcripts of a maternally expressed gene (AGO2:endosiRNA) hydrolyzes the cognate maternal mRNA at the site of complementarity with the endosiRNA (inferred from mouse homologs). In mouse early embryos, Ago2 is involved in the decay of over half of the maternal mRNAs (Zhang et al. 2020).
