DPPA3 displaces UHRF1 from the N-terminal tail of histone H3 and remains bound to UHRF1 in the female nucleus (inferred from mouse homologs). The binding of DPPA3 to UHRF1 prevents UHRF1 from recruiting the DNA methylase DNMT1 to chromatin and hence causes hypomethylation of regions of the genome that persists from the oocyte into the female pronucleus of the zygote (inferred from mouse oocytes and zygotes).
