DPPA3 (also called STELLA) binds dimethylated lysine-9 of histone H3 (H3K9me2, lysine-10 of the preprotein) that is present in the maternal genome but not the paternal genome of the zygote (inferred from mouse homologs). DPPA3 prevents TET3 from oxidizing 5-methylcytidine to 5-hydroxymethylcytidine and thereby blocks one pathway of active DNA methylation in the female pronucleus (inferred from mouse zygotes).
