Sulfociprofloxacin (sulfo-Cipro) is excreted by hepatic cells via bile into the GI lumen (reviewed by Sörgel, 1989). This means it is transported through the apical membrane of hepatocytes. The responsible transport protein is unknown. Broad substrate specificity ATP-binding cassette transporter, ABCG2, is localized in the apical membrane of hepatic cells (Matsushima et al, 2005). It is possible that ABCG2 transports sulfo-Cipro out of the cell.
