NOGGIN (NOG) binds BMP4 in the extracellular region (inferred from Xenopus homologs in Zimmerman et al. 1996) and suppresses BMP4 signaling (inferred from mouse homologs). The decreased BMP signaling results in specification of paraxial mesoderm rather than lateral plate mesoderm.
