Based on studies in mouse (Weng et al. 2018) and rat (Brigidi et al. 2019) neurons, NPAS4 stimulates transcription of the PLK2 gene. PLK2 is a serine/threonine kinase that regulates formation of synapses between hippocampal mossy fibers and CA3 pyramidal neurons, which are essential for contextual memory encoding (Weng et al. 2018).
