PAX8 is expressed first in the intermediate mesoderm and continuously in the developing excretory system (inferred from the mouse homolog). Retinoic acid activates expression of Pax8 in the mouse embryo (Cartry et al. 2006). While Pax8 mutant mice show no urogenital abnormalities, Pax8 Pax2 double mutants fail to form the metanephros, ureter, and genital tracts (Bouchard et al. 2002).
