Phosphorylated, acetylated NFE2L2 binds to the antioxidant response element (ARE) in the promoter of the GSTA1 gene as assessed by electrophoretic mobility shift assay in mouse and stimulates GSTA1 expression (Itoh et al, 1997; Thimmulappa et al, 2002; Sun et al, 2009). GSTA1 protein expressed downstream of the KEAP1:NFE2L2 pathway contributes to the antioxidant response by catalyzing the nucleophilic attack of glutathione on endogenous and exogenous electrophilic compounds (reviewed in Baird and Yamamoto, 2020; Chatterjee et al, 2018).
