The BMP4 gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is translated to yield BMP4 protein. In lateral plate mesoderm, expression of BMP4 is activated by FOXF1 (inferred from mouse homologs) and then maintained by GATA4, which binds the BMP4 promoter and is also a target of FOXF1 (inferred from mouse homologs).
