The pulmonary surfactant protein D (SP-D or SFTPD) binds to to the spike glycoprotein (S) of SARS-CoV-1 (Leth-Larsen R et al. 2007). SARS-CoV-1 S and SARS-CoV-2 S share 76% sequence identity and 86% sequence similarity with SARS-CoV-2 (Mohammed MEA 2021). Based on studies with the SARS-CoV-2 S protein, SFTPD inhibits binding of S to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and prevents the virus entry and replication in human cells (Hsieh MH et al. 2021; Arroyo R et al. 2021).
