In cancer cells it has been shown that Snail (SNAI1) protein binds the promoter of the E-Cadherin (CDH1) gene and represses expression of CDH1 (Batlle et al. 2000, Maturi et al. 2018, and inferred from mouse homologs). Repression of CDH1 by SNAI1 results in a reduction in CDH1 protein at the plasma membrane that causes loss of contact between epithelial cells during the epithelial to mesenchyme transition that is required for mesoderm formation (inferred from mouse embryos).
