The ISL1 gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is translated to yield ISL1 protein. Transcription of ISL1 is directly activated in the second heart field (SHF) by GATA4 and LEF1:CTNNB1 (beta-catenin) (inferred from mouse homologs). Transcription of ISL1 is positively regulated, perhaps directly, by TBX1 (inferred from mouse homologs). In mice, Isl1-positive cells in the second heart field can generate endothelial, cardiac, and smooth muscle cells (Moretti et al. 2006)
