The MESP1 gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is translated to yield MESP1 protein. In lateral plate mesoderm, EOMES and T (TBXT, Brachyury) activate transcription of MESP1 (inferred from mouse homologs). MESP1 is the first observed marker of cardiac progenitor cells.
