The GATA4 gene is transcribed to yield mRNA and the mRNA is translated to yield GATA4 protein (inferred from mouse homologs). MESP1 binds the promoter of the GATA4 gene and activates transcription (inferred from mouse homologs). GATA4 is expressed in MESP1-positive cardiac progenitors (den Hartogh et al. 2016) of both the first heart field and second heart field (inferred from mouse homologs). After activation by MESP1, GATA4 is regulated by NKX2-5 (Riazi et al. 2009).
