Excess SARS-CoV-2 spike protein accumulates in the plasma membrane, apparently leaking from transport processes in the ER-Golgi network (Buchrieser et al, 2021; Cattin-Ortolá et al, 2021). It binds to glycosylated angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) embedded within an adjacent cell plasma membrane (Zhang et al 2020; Sanders et al, 2021).
